Review: Kylie Cosmetics Candy K and Dolce K

I really wanted to love these, especially because of how much I paid for them. Sadly, these liquid lips just don’t meet my expectations.

I picked up two of Kylie Cosmetics’ most popular shades, Candy K (Lip kit, $29) and Dolce K ($17, single).

I love the nude shades, but the formula is a miss. Right in the product description it says, “extremely long wearing lipstick contains moisturizing ingredients for a comfortable, emollient and silky feel that does not dry your lips out.”

In my experience, none of the three lipsticks I’ve tried from Kylie Cosmetics are long wearing and all three severely dried out my lips. (See my review of the Merry Lip Kit from the holiday collection here.)

While this isn’t the worst lipstick I’ve ever tried, it certainly isn’t worth the price tag. Pricing the individual lipsticks at $17 puts them in the high end category, and I have high expectations for high end products. The formula of these lipsticks is something I would expect from the drugstore.

I will keep them and probably continue to wear them because I do like the shades and they are okay if I’m only going to be wearing them for a couple of hours, but I definitely can’t wear them if I plan to eat a meal. Food makes the lipstick crumble off, and reapplying just makes it look patchy.

Candy K was bearable when I applied a small amount of lip balm and filled in my entire lips with the liner. Dolce K dried out even when I did the same thing. There is inconsistency that seems to correlate to the pigment used.

My final thoughts are these would be something I would be happy with if it was $7 or $8, but $17? I would much rather buy Jeffree Star Cosmetics Velour Liquid Lips ($18) which have a far better, more comfortable formula.

I would even recommend the Colourpop liquid lips ($6) over these although I would stick with the Ultra Satin formula because the Ultra Matte can be very drying as well, and the Colourpop lip liners are virtually identical. You really are paying a premium for Kylie’s name on the packaging.
