This has been a hot topic in the beauty community, so I was itching to pick it up. The Nyx Total Control Drop Foundation ($13.99) is a thin, lightweight foundation that is supposed to be able to be built up from sheer to full coverage depending on the amount of drops you use.
This is a great idea, but the product is a poor execution. I gave this foundation a really good try: I tried it on its own, I tried it with a tinted moisturizer and I tried adding it to another foundation to add coverage. All three times I was thoroughly disappointed, and I will be returning it.
When I tried it on its own (with a primer underneath and set with powder) it was incredibly hard to build it up to full coverage, even though the package claims that you only need four drops to get full coverage. It clung to all my dry spots and any acne I had, and wore completely off my nose within a couple of hours.
With the Tarte Tinted Moisturizer ($36), it was a total mess. Not only did it add almost no coverage, it caked up terribly after a few hours. You could see literally every imperfection on my face, showing pores I didn’t even know I had.
With one of my holy grail light to medium foundations, Maybelline Pure Dream BB ($8.99), I tried to add just two drops to add some coverage, and it just made it greasy and thinned out.
I wanted to love this, but it just didn’t work for me. Hopefully Nyx can revise the formula and make this better, but until then, it’s a miss for me. There are a lot of products I love from Nyx, but this is just not one of them.
