Review: Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation

Finding a good foundation can be really difficult for me. I’m super pale so frequently brands don’t carry a shade light enough for me, and my skin is combination so I get oil build up in my T-zone and other areas I get dry spots. This can lead to problems with a lot of foundations, especially full coverage.

That being said, I really enjoy the Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation ($39). I’m in shade Ivory.

Usually my biggest issue with full coverage foundations is they cake up around my T-zone and emphasize my dry spots. This foundation doesn’t do either of those things. Even though it’s formulated with clay and it’s a bit on the thicker side, once I blend it in with my Beauty Blender, it sits on the skin nicely.

This does a good job of being full coverage – my skin tends to be very pink and you can’t see any of my redness peak through, which I love. This is very long-lasting, but to get to the 12-hour lifespan that the name advertises, you must set this foundation with a translucent powder and a setting spray to make sure any oil is kept at bay.

It’s a huge plus to me that this foundation is cruelty-free, sulfate/paraben free and vegan. I don’t use exclusively products with those labels, but it makes me feel much better about the price tag.

I don’t find that this clogs my pores (which full coverage foundations tend to do to me), but I wouldn’t recommend anyone use a super full coverage foundation for day to day makeup. It’s better to use a lighter foundation for average use so your skin can breathe, and use a foundation like this for special occasions.

One issue I have has nothing to do with the performance of the product, my complaint is while they have a shade for me (which I love!), out of all 25 shades, there is only 3 suitable for deep skin tones. It’s frustrating to see that a great brand such as tarte isn’t creating a full range of shades.

Overall, if you are looking for a reliable full coverage foundation, I would highly suggest this one.

What’s your favorite foundation? Let me know in the comments!

xoxo, Jenna
