Best Ice Cream in Sonoma County

With the weather reaching the triple digits and July officially National Ice Cream Month, it’s time to go out and get a scoop (or three) of some delicious ice cream. Here are my favorite ice cream shops in Sonoma County – both well known and hidden gems.

Sonoma

The Chocolate Cow
This is the ice cream shop of my childhood. I would frequent with my grandparents as we walked the Sonoma Square – The Chocolate Cow is a wonderland for kids. It has ice cream, candy and little toys. For the adults, I will also suggest the homemade fudge.

Santa Rosa

Frozen Art Gourmet Ice Cream
This spot was unknown to me until I started looking for this specific post – and I have to say, I will definitely be going regularly! They have the ice creams you would expect as well as flavors you wouldn’t such as Chai Latte, Egg Nog, Tequila and Whiskey Vanilla. They also have traditional Mexican treats such as Mangonada and Paletas (Popsicles).
500 Sebastopol Rd, Santa Rosa, CA 95407, Daily 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Shuffle’s Magical Ice Cream Shoppe
Shuffle’s is a unique idea – not only is it an ice cream shop, it’s also a magic store with shows. I’m talking “Is this your card?” magic trick shows, perfect for families with kids. The ice cream is pretty tasty too.

Petaluma

Lala’s Creamery
Lala’s is a Petaluma favorite – they have yummy flavors (the best I’ve had is chocolate raspberry!) and decedent shakes. The whole ice cream shop has a 1950’s feel, and is perfect for an ice cream date with your sweetie.
134 Petaluma Blvd N, Petaluma, CA 94952, Sun – Thurs 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., Fri – Sat 1 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Healdsburg

Amy’s Wicked Slush
Honestly, I never thought something called a slush would be so amazing. Not only is this spot right across from Veteran’s Memorial Beach (talk about perfect placement), but it’s like they’ve captured summer in a cup. You can order either slush, soft serve or a split (which is half slush, half soft serve). My favorite is the Dreamsicle spilt which is vanilla soft serve and orange cream slush. It tastes exactly like the creamsicles of my childhood.

Noble Folk Ice Cream & Pie Bar
The folks over at Noble Folk have quite the creative streak – I had their Lucky Charms ice cream and I was blown away. Who knew a breakfast cereal could be turned into the ice cream of my dreams? I didn’t. I will be returning to give the pie a try too.
116 Matheson St, Healdsburg, CA 95448, daily 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Sebastopol

Screamin’ Mimi’s
I’m sure you’ve heard of Screamin’ Mimi’s before – but if you haven’t, they’ve been voted best ice cream in Sonoma County for 22 consecutive years. It’s really that good. (Flavor suggestion – Mimi’s Mud is awesome for chocolate lovers!)
6902 Sebastopol Ave, Sebastopol, CA 95472, Sun – Thurs 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Fri – Sat 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Subzero Ice Cream & Yogurt
Subzero is an ice cream experience above and beyond just a scoop in a cone. You pick a base (non-dairy options as well!), a flavor, mix-ins and the ice cream is made right in front of your eyes with liquid nitrogen. Chemistry can be quite tasty!
6760 McKinley #110, Sebastopol, CA 95472, Sun – Thurs 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., Fri – Sat 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Trader Jim’s Dole Whip
Trader Jim’s is a local food truck that serves pineapple dole whip that is a little cup of paradise. They frequently go to local markets and The Block Petaluma – find out where they will be next here.
