Even though the Bay Area has pretty mild weather compared to the blizzard of a winter on the East Coast, the colder air can still dry out my skin. I have combination skin – which means my T-zone (nose + forehead) get oily while I get dry patches on the rest of my face. This becomes quite a pain when the temperature drops. For those of you who feel my pain (or just want to check out some awesome products), here are my current skincare favorites!
Cleanser: I had the hardest time finding a cleanser that cleared out my pores but didn’t dry the daylights out of my skin (and didn’t clean out my bank account!). I finally found an affordable cleanser that gets the job done: the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser ($13.99). After using this for a couple weeks, my skin was noticeably clearer and I didn’t have such intense dry patches. Don’t let the simple packaging fool you – this stuff is amazing!
Makeup Remover: For whatever reason, my skin is super sensitive to most regular makeup removers, so it was hard to find one that didn’t make my skin sting. I found a great combination that is gentle on the skin: the Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm ($29.50) for waterproof, heavy makeup and Burt’s Bees Cucumber and Sage Facial Cleansing Towelettes ($5.99) for day-to-day use. Tip: I’ve often found the Burt’s Bees wipes at the Nordstrom rack for $4!
Moisturizer: Because my skin is combo, I have to be careful with moisturizing. If I go too heavy, my skin will get super greasy, but if I don’t use any, it’s flakey town. The two products I have been loving are the Hey Honey Honey Silk Facial Serum ($45) and the Clinique Moisture Surge Hydrating Supercharged Concentrate ($39). I use the Hey Honey serum daily after washing my face and I use the Clinique moisturizer on days my skin is really dry or after using any pore clearing face masks. I’ve definitely seen improvement with the dry patches! Tip: For those with oily skin, you still need to moisturize – just avoid oil-based products and use a water gel based moisturizer (like the Clinique one). Your skin will thank you!
Facial Spray: Sometimes we are too busy to do a full routine every day or we need a little boost throughout the day. I recommend the Mario Badescu Facial Spray ($12) which comes in different types including rosewater, cucumber, and lavendar (all including aloe). This helps refresh and tone the face, and can be used with moisturizer or on its own. I use it with my skincare routine as well as a couple sprays before I put on makeup.
Face Masks: Those who know me well know that I am OBSESSED with face masks. I try new ones all the time based on what my skin needs. However, my favorites are from Friedman and Tony Moly (click each brand to see my in-depth review!).
